We increasingly see companies participating in partnerships with donors and development NGOs to start and scale inclusive business models, value chains, and markets. Often the companies' contributions are two-fold. On one hand, they buy from, sell to, or distribute through suppliers, distributors, retailers, and customers at the base of the pyramid - with all the internal staff time, process and systems development, infrastructure, equipment, etc. etc. that this requires. On the other hand, they often pay or donate money to NGOs to provide those suppliers, distributors, retailers, and customers at the base of the pyramid with education, training, and other support services.
It's easy to quantify the latter; the former, not so much.
Can anyone point us toward research or best practices for quantifying or valuing companies' non-cash contributions to these kinds of partnerships? Donor programs, academic papers, consulting tools?
