Building Business Partnerships Fit for the Future: A Renewed Vision for Business Action on Poverty, Inequality and Climate Change

I agree. This approach often requires innovative models of delivery as we cannot always rely on doing things in the traditional way. Therefore, an entrepreneurial, solutions-oriented mindset is needed to identify and capitalize on opportunities that have remained unexplored

Response to Question 1: Part 3

A third point here would be to ensure we are decolonizing our interactions with businesses across the Global North and Global South. We recently ran a webinar discussing this topic focusing on decolonizing research, which can be found here.

Good point, Laura. I wonder what you think also about the issue of C-Suite versus other parts of the business dealing with these issues. Some of our research found what everyone knows – that so often business strategy is disconnected from sourcing and sustainability teams, which tend to be weaker.

Youth members are looking for more and more opportunities to learn about the current/future market for green jobs (not just climate sector : intersecting with health, justice, Tech for Good, training and development), and learning the skills needed to build impact in this area.

We totally agree Max - when engaging with farmers and workers it is important to understand all the dynamics are at play. It is about viewing farmers and workers as equal stakeholders in the value chain to create collective solutions and ownership

  1. Qu 1 My response to this is are business partnerships still the right approach given the urgency with which we need to address earth systems crises and poverty? Do we need to be talking more about new business models? Can partnerships help us do this - are there any good examples of partnerships on regenerative business models, circularity, and or trialling new governance structures like employee owned businesses and integrated profit and loss statements (like Natura are trying)?

If your able to mulit-task any further - please also take this survey that we have launched today - its also aimed to feed into the report we are all contributing to today! How Can Businesses Build Partnerships that are Fit for the Future? - Business Fights Poverty

And please do share the survey via linked in or across your networks!

Hey David - great to see you on here  long time - hope all is well

On the issue of resilience, particularly related to global crises like climate change, solutions are always evolving, especially in agri-food systems. Partnerships between businesses, CSOs and public sector must therefore be able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances, such as technological advancements, climate variability, market shifts, and policy developments. This requires systems, processes, and tools that facilitate rapid learning and decision-making, that “speak” in the technical sense to one another, and that enable partners to share risks and resources to enhance resilience.

Fully agree! Stakeholder engagement is essential especially when coming into new communities and encountering different contexts. I was part of a webinar on this topic on how to effectively conduct stakeholder engagement and why it is essential for companies - sharing the link here in case of interest.

For a program to be successful we need multi-sectoral partnerships based on trust, integrity and civic concerns. We need to plan and keep in mind future partnerships and outcomes that will be achieved. Pandemic era, global disasters and political unrest have shown us the strength in community. We need businesses who are innovators and first movers to undertake risk and step up. At PATH, we believe in partnerships and while working with the entire food ecosystem we hope to bridge the gap and make nutritious food accessible to all.

Our perspective on partnerships is both internal and external to the business. Influence and championship needs to happen at C-Suite in the first instance. They also need to adopt their mindset to inclusive growth and create equitable opportunities for all within their business and operations. This goes beyond compliance and data. We have examples of this in the question

I will reach out to schedule a call

Max are you able to tell us anymore about the partnership you have with the Co-op - how did you build such a long term partnership that has promoted Fairtrade?

All that is being mentioned is really important. But nothing will be enough if we do not control the greed for making just money in the companies. I mean, “just money” as opposed to creating wealth for the community at large

I think you are asking the right question and the challenges that we face globally and in particular sector like agriculture are incredibly complex. No one business or NGO or government can solve them alone and the need for partnerships is more urgent than ever, in my view. This does require new business models, new ways of doing things. So, spot on in your comments.

The Partnership Collective is also thinking on these lines. We believe partnerships can create new business models. We have more examples for question 2
