How can we put diversity and inclusion at the heart of climate action to spread the benefits and burdens fairly?

Some large NGOs are striking deals with large private sector actors - but many still find this challenging (reputational risks). I wonder how we can de-risk it to make it a win-win for more?

Ok everyone - lets imagine we have the elevator pitch moment with a CEO of a large MNC - how would you convince them to focus on climate justice?!

We need to set out clear arguments - how climate justice will enable their businesses to survive and thrive. We need to demystify it all and share practical examples of how business can do better (and all scales of business - not just the big players).

I think social technology can also be used in a fairly straightforward way. We have been talking about youth engagement and benefits to business - using social media tools to engage new entrants to the workforce can be an effective way to strengthen connections to the next generation of top talent who are social media natives, and ensure your climate actions are meeting the higher expectations of this valuable, but often not meaningfully engaged demographic.

Communities who are disproportionately vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, produce the agri-commodities on which your products, suppliers, consumers and business are dependent. If you don’t bring your influence to bear on this topic now, your business will not exist in the long run.

  1. Context: Given the growing awareness of physical climate risks to our communities (where our customers and staff live), this is the time to step out in front.
  2. Relevance to the business: Here’s why our core value proposition as a business calls for us to participate in climate justice.
  3. Hypothesis: How we can help and why we’re the right organization to do it.

@rjoshi brilliant - it’s about reducing vulnerabilities to business and people!

My call to action would be for companies to embed sustainability into their business operations and moving away from seeing it as a CSR initiative.
